Towards the establishment of genetic reserves for crop wild relatives and landraces in Europe

The ECPGR In situ and On©\farm Conservation Network Coordinating Group, the Centre for Macaronesian Studies of the University of Madeira (CEM©\UMa) and the Institute for Breeding Research on Agricultural Crops of the Julius K¨¹hn©\Institut ©\ Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants (JKI), have the pleasure to announce the symposium ¡°Towards the establishment of genetic reserves for crop wild relatives and landraces in Europe¡± and the joint meeting of the ECPGR In situ and On farm Conservation Network and the final meeting of the EU project AGRI GENRES 057 ¨C AEGRO, to be held at the University of Madeira, Funchal (Portugal), on 13th©\16th September, 2010.
Conservation biologists, protected area managers and experts from the agrobiodiversity sector engaged in the management and use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture are welcome to attend the symposium.
The symposium is an excellent opportunity to meet with European experts working in the field of in situ and on farm management of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, discuss and share the results of the EU project "An Integrated European In Situ Management Work Plan: Implementing Genetic Reserves and On Farm Concepts (AEGRO)¡± project. We extend a warm welcome to colleagues in the nature and species conservation sector who share our interest in the conservation of crop wild relatives and landraces.
The University of Madeira, would like to take the opportunity to invite you to visit Madeira Island in 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity, and participate in the symposium ¡°Towards the establishment of genetic reserves for crop wild relatives and landraces in Europe¡±. Madeira Archipelago belongs to the region of Macaronesia, designation which comes from the Greek and means "islands of fortunate¡±, a fascinating biogeographical region, which gives you opportunity to see a relic vegetation of the Tertiary Period, the forest Laurisilva (World Heritage by UNESCO since 1999), and many endemic and CWR species.
